• one up them, brick by brick

Anaconda Smoke Stack State Park in Montana has [one of] the largest freestanding brick structures. It was completed in 1918.

According to Guinness World Records, the designers originally planned for 160 meters, but revised their plan upwards, to 178 meters, “when word reached of larger smokestacks under construction elsewhere.”

Rumor is there was a dance at the top, but people may be transposing that fun tidbit with the now demolished Omaha-Grant stack.
