love and longing in alaska

Women have a saying in Alaska about the men: “The odds are good, but the goods are odd.”

The first half was more accurate in the late 1800s and early 1900s, when there were about 250 men for every 100 women. Now it seems to be 110 for every 100 if you average the state.

It does depend on where you live. The Aleutians, as of 2021, had about 180 men for every 100 women, but the women outnumber men in places like Sitka.

It’s a popular saying, and is used often for tech universities, but it is most linked to Alaska. For an episode of her show in the 1980s, Oprah Winfrey flew 20 Alaskan bachelors to Chicago to help them find love. None of them did, at least on the show, but the then 32-year-old John Hendrickson married Vanderbilt heiress Marylou Whitney, who was 71.

They decided to live in Palm Beach, FL.
